Death Valley - one of our favorite places!

This page has impressions from a number of trips through various parts of Death Valley National Park. The most memorable was in August of 1999. Yes, the truck has A/C, but it was broken at that time ... temperatures were in the 120's and a strong hot wind was coming up through the valley from the South! You may not agree, but I think one has to experience Death Valley at least once without A/C, otherwise you really don't know what it is like! Camp for the experience how it must have been like in the old days, then go for a treat in Furnace Creek Inn!

Owens Valley and the Sierra Nevada
A spectacular spring morning in the old mining town of Cerro Gordo, high up in the Inyo Mountains,
offers a breathtaking view of the snow-capped Sierra Nevada towering over Owens Lake!

Cerro Gordo
We're sad to hear that 9000 feet wasn't high enough for you, Jody, you had to go to a higher place!
We'll always remember you, thanks to your efforts we had a chance to enjoy this ghost town, with its incredible history and its breathtaking views!

Owens Lake from Cerro Gordo
The early morning haze over Owens Lake leads to a rather whimsical color display!

Looking down Lippincott Mine Road towards Saline Valley!
Rough, narrow, steep, remote, rocky, and hot like hell - this is how Lippincott Mine Road brought us out of Saline Valley and up to the Racetrack, with dramatic vistas to take in along the way. We went back down to meet up with our party at the Saline Valley dunes, but completed the loop two years later, coming up from Ubehebe Crater to step on the Racetrack, and leaving via Hunter Mountain!

The Sand Dunes in Saline Valley
In Death Valley National Park, every self-respecting valley has to have sand dunes - they are simply obligatory! Here, the sand dunes of Saline Valley shine brightly as a few hardy shrubs start to cast their shadows across the desert floor in the late afternoon sun.

Ubehebe Crater!
The walls of Ubehebe Crater appear to burst into flames in the relentless sun of an August afternoon!

Finds along Saline Valley Road...
A burst of color along the road reserved to those who take the time to keep their eyes open!
